See the Layers of History Hidden in Waikiki

You drive past these landmarks every day. You know the traffic, the surf spots, and the best places to eat. But have you ever seen the spirit of the land?

XploreRide offers Kamaʻāina a chance to experience Honolulu through a completely new lens. Hosted by HIS, we have combined the rich storytelling traditions of Hawaii with the futuristic “RideVision” technology from Japan to create an experience that honors the past while embracing the future.

This isn’t just a tour for visitors. It is a journey into the moʻolelo (stories) of the ‘aina. Watch as the busy streets of Kalakaua melt away to reveal the ancient underwater world that once was, and witness the fiery birth of Lēahi (Diamond Head) right outside your window. It is the perfect weekend activity for ohana looking to beat the heat and try something new right here in town.

Authenticity, Sustainability, and Comfort

We know that residents care about three things: respecting the culture, protecting the land, and
avoiding the hassle. Here is why XploreRide is perfect for your next family outing:

1. Rooted in Respect (Cultural Authenticity)

We understand the importance of telling Hawaii’s stories correctly. We didn’t want to create just another tourist attraction. That is why our content was produced under the strict supervision of our Cultural Advisor, Blaine Kia. A Kumu Hula and custodian of Hawaiian traditions, Blaine ensured that every character—from Uncle Manu the Manta Ray to the fire spirits—reflects the true spirit and “Mana” of the islands. This is entertainment with integrity.

2. Malama the 'Aina (Sustainability)

We are committed to preserving the beauty of Hawaii for future generations. XploreRide operates on a large Zero-Emission Electric Bus provided in partnership with Hawaii’s only EV bus company. We emit no CO2 while running, contributing to a reduction of over 21 tons of CO2 as of late 2025. Furthermore, a portion of our proceeds is donated to the Waikīkī Aquarium to support the research and protection of our precious coral reefs and marine ecosystems

3. The Ultimate "Cool" Staycation

Let’s be honest—it gets hot out there. Whether you are looking for a rainy day activity for the keiki or a way to entertain visiting relatives without walking miles in the sun, our fully air-conditioned bus is the answer. Sit back in comfort, enjoy the ride, and let us handle the traffic while you enjoy the show. It is the perfect way to be a “tourist in your own town” without the sweat.

Japanese Tech Meets Island Innovation

XploreRide represents a global collaboration. The “RideVision” system was developed by Synesthesias Inc., a tech venture from the University of Tokyo.

This proprietary system links the vehicle’s motion data with the VR headset.

  • If the bus speeds up to 50km/h, the digital world matches that speed perfectly.
  • If the bus turns, the visuals turn instantly.

This precise synchronization minimizes motion sickness, making it safe and comfortable for aunties, uncles, and keiki alike. It’s a “World’s First” technology right here in your backyard.

Where We Go

Our route takes you through the heart of Honolulu’s most famous scenic areas. While the digital magic happens inside the headset, you are traveling through the real world. The 10.3 km loop includes:

  • Start/End: DFS Waikiki
  • Waikiki Beach: See the coast overlayed with ancient marine life.
  • Kapiolani Park: Cruise through the green spaces of the city.
  • Diamond Head: Witness the majestic crater while visualizing its volcanic history.

What Our Riders Are Saying

TripAdvisor Rating: 4.8/5 Stars

Great Immersive Experience!!

“The Xplore ride was really fun and brought out the kid in me! If you know a little about VR and Mixed Reality, this experience starts off with Mixed Reality with nice fish and marine life around you and some light educational sections on Waikiki and the beaches. The ride does transition into full VR at times with underwater volcanic vents, above ground volcanic eruption, a 360 visual aerial view above the islands (nice!), and an underwater route with all sorts of aquatic creatures around you, known to be local to the islands and some nice coral (this was my favorite part). There is more light educational pieces dispersed in these full on VR parts as well. The movement of the bus really gives you the sense of “traveling” through the VR worlds and even the fish “swimming” through the bus in Mixed Reality was enhanced by the movement. Our host was wonderful and really explained everything well! The driver was very friendly too. The experience can be heard in Japanese or English. Too me, the only negative, though the headsets are of very high quality, was the pass through video of the outside was a bit unfocused when it was too far in the distance (like the ocean views near Diamond Head). Final thoughts are that it is definitely worth it and please consider supporting this business and others that bring the beauty of nature and the immersion of technology and imagination together!”

Tell me more about Hawaii.

“I was able to see and enjoy the amazing Hawaii. The content was good. The tour time was just right. I also look forward to the new footage. The description of the person in charge is easy to understand, and it is OK for the elderly.”
